Facebook began as "Facemash" back in 2003, strictly for Harvard users. Today, is it the world's most widely used social networking site with over 1.2 billion active users. In 2010, the American drama "The Social Network" was released, based on the site, which became the basis of this fun and engaging kinetic type piece.
Since discovering kinetic type videos in my uni workshops I have been fascinated by the work of others, especially those that have designed kinetic type to accompany iconic films.
While exploring YouTube and watching kinetic type based on other films such as Pulp Fiction, I came across this short design piece a dialogue taken from "The Social Network", at the point in the film where 'The Facebook' goes live. Although this design isn't the most colourful or experimental, I really liked it because it has a clear connection to the film and the subject of the dialogue. I love the use of colours and fonts to help visualise the site that they are talking about in the dialogue, and I also love the use of code...I can't help but wonder if the motion graphic would have been more effective if the creator had used html and css coding more!
I think that this design is appropriate for the dialogue used and is enjoyable to watch, my only criticism would be that I think sometimes the words are hard to read and keep up with. I understand that the dialogue moves at a quick speed, but I do wonder if there is a more effective way the typography could be designed so that there are more words on the screen at one time or more simple transitions to allow the audience to follow them more easily. Despite this I love this animation and I am excited to have a go at my own!
