D&AD Student Awards - Typography

The brief for this project was to "Create a Typographic Manifesto for Windows Phone 7." For the winner (Ryan Campbell) Microsoft offered a month's paid placement at one of 5 agencies including AKQA and LBi as well as a free Windows 7 phone and an Xbox 360.
At the end of my second year at uni I had to give a presentation about a topic or topics of interest that I could use in my last year/two years of the course. I had no idea where to start with this so I began by looking on the D&AD website for inspiration. I have always been particularly passionate about typography and print design so I chose to focus on projects that have been submitted in these categories, and it wasn't long before I came across this eye-catching typographic piece for Windows Phone 7.

This outcome is a simple yet effective idea of creating a typographic manifesto by using the same structure as the periodic table, replacing the elements with words to describe the operating system. It stood out to me immediately because I love typography and have a growing interest in technology and digital processes and I think this design is a neat way to combine the two.

Windows Phone 7 is a great example of flat and responsive design that clearly reflects the design of the periodic table by using a grid with square tiles on the home screen, so immediately I can make the link between that and the operating system, however I think that while I am looking for inspiration for future projects it would be interesting to see the development work behind this outcome and the thought processes and experiments that led to this final piece.
