D&AD Talent - Portfolios: Sin Yee Lau - Promoting Malaysia

"A paper craft project which i did for my major assignment, on promoting my very own country, Malaysia. I challenge myself to use only flat papers, to create something pop up and 3D with self made textures. Choosing the right colors and the compositions, as well as the lighting are crucial for giving the right depth and shadows to the paper crafts.
The outcomes are two paper craft posters, one for culture whereas one for delicacies of Malaysia. The posters are also suitable for an interactive website page in Malaysia's Tourism Board where viewers can click on the imagery to obtain more information regarding on it."

"Overall look for the local delights of Malaysia. It includes the prestigious Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai, Teh Tarik, Laksa, Satay, ABC, Kolo Mee and a variety of Nyoya Kuih. It is a fun piece with a lot of experiment of papers and building textures."

"Overall look for the art and culture of Malaysia. It includes the famous musical instruments, Sape and Gendang. Traditional local games such as Sepak Takraw, Congkak and Gasing are also displayed within. Others include Wau, Wayang Kuilt, Festival and Iban Mask, Lanterns and Lion Dance mascot. It is another fun piece with a lot of details and playful elements."

Whilst browsing on the D&AD website i stumbled across this portfolio work and thought it was definitely worth blogging about! This is a really interesting piece of work - I love the idea of purely using paper to create a 3D poster. The colours used work really well together and i particularly love the detail cut out of the papers in the poster illustrating Malaysian culture.

Since I had the opportunity to design a pop-up book during my first year at University, I have been fascinated by paper engineering and 3D paper sculptures. I love these 3D posters and think that even photographs of them look great. This led me to think that this idea of creating 3D pictures using layers of coloured paper could be used in advertising or web design and would look great on screens or billboards to give the audience the illusion that the illustration or design is popping out when in fact it is just a 2D image. I would definitely like to experiment with this in future projects as I love to get more involved with projects and make things with my hands rather than just designing on a computer all the time.
