I first came across SMASH products whilst browsing on Pinterest. I had been in the process of creating my own scrapbook of sentimental items that I have collected over the years, when a series of images of this particular scrapbook caught my eye.
I followed the link provided and discovered that a woman had blogged about a scrapbook she had created during a trip she took to London, using SMASH products. In her post she commented on the fact that a lot of people shy away from scrapbooking because they are under the impression that they are "not creative enough" or "don't have the time", which I completely agree with, but she went on to explain that SMASH products are especially good to use to create on-the-go scrapbooks. She referred to her creation as the 'unscrapbook', explaining that she purchased a SMASH Folio and a selection of patterned tapes, papers and stickers as well as a black marker pen, and packed them in her bag to create a simple yet effective scrapbook by completing new pages at the end of each day with the ephemera she had collected from her travels.
So why can't 'unscrapbooks' be created using any products? What makes the SMASH range from K&Company so special? These are the two questions I asked myself when I read this blog post, but I have since seen the products sold in stores and I can now understand the difference. I have noticed that in the past when I have been scrapbooking I have found myself buying a different pack of stickers or embellishments for every page I am designing as a lot of these scrapbooking packs seem to have a theme that may only be applicable to one of my scrapbook pages. The difference with the SMASH range is that they provide a lot of colourful embellishments and stickers that remain generic, allowing you to use them to decorate any page no matter what the subject. Some may think that this makes their pages a little more boring but I actually think that it gives you the opportunity to create a scrapbook that flows by using the same decorative additions (tapes, tabs, labels and clips), while also customising each page to suit the topic without having to buy new products.
This woman's idea of the 'unscrapbook' inspired my to create my own scrapbook following a trip I took to Florida that I completed simply by using postcards bought from local gift shops, maps and tickets collected from each theme park I visited. I used the postcards to keep a diary every day I was there and combined my collection using patterned tape, and I was really happy with the result. I am hoping to book a trip to New York soon and I am definitely going to purchase some SMASH products to take with me to create another 'unscrapbook' of my trip. Before reading this blog post I was definitely one of those people that didn't think I had the time or creativity for scrapbooking but I have definitely had my eye opened to new possibilities and have learnt that scrapbooking doesn't actually have to be as complicated as we make it...with a few colourful papers and tapes and some great memories a precious keepsake can soon be made!
