A Lesson On Typography

Animation is something I have always been fascinated by but never really indulged in as I have never worked with any motion graphic software and wouldn't know where to start. "A Lesson on Typography" is a brilliant example of kinetic type, a form of animation, that I love and find inspires me to challenge myself and try to achieve something that I would normally shy away from.

For the final module that I completed in my first year of uni, I had to design and produce a motion graphic piece to accompany a song that I had been assigned. Before this module I had never designed any kind of animation before and didn't really know where to start, so I spent some time exploring existing motion graphics on YouTube.

Following this I completed a number of workshops in uni that gave us the opportunity to produce some kinetic type using Adobe Illustrator and After Effects. Due to my passion for typography I really engaged with these workshops and in my spare time I went back to YouTube and focused on kinetic type, which is when I stumbled across this piece created by the Vancouver Film School.

I found myself particularly drawn to this video primarily because of the subject - not only is it a typographical piece of design but it discusses the fundamental aspects of typography itself. However, I also love the colour palette and fonts used, as well as the music. I think that the combination of these three give the design a vintage feel which is a style I particularly like.

I am that sort of person that is always thinking of new creative things that I want to do while never getting round to actually completing them, but having another go at designing and producing some kinetic type is going to the top of my list. I really enjoyed the workshops I had at the time and I am fascinated by other kinetic type that has been produced. However, while I love the subject of this motion graphic because it is about typography, I think I would like to have a go at creating visuals for some dialogue from a film as I think that would be extremely fun to play around with!
